Last of Summer

I wore this yesterday to go to uni. I was incredibly tired, near brain dead. It's not exactly gratifying to see evidence of this in photos.

I was very proud on my hemming job on this skirt, not lop sided in the least! It's a little harder to style than I'd anticipated, this shade of brown doesn't get along with much in my wardrobe.

Defining me

As I headed back to uni last week, I began to have a bit of a style crisis. For a while I'd been happy wearing whatever genre I pleased, but lately I've begun to feel I desperately need a style.

Happily, this was all remedied by a round of the local op shops where I found a number of pieces that just screamed me. Among them was this little black skirt and sparkly striped cardigan with shoulder pads. As I tried on these and a couple of other pieces it came together for me. Quirky, bold patterns, occasional vintage piece, feminine.

Though I know my personal style will always be evolving, I feel that these elements will remain a solid foundation.

My course load for uni this semester is quite heavy, though hugely interesting. I'm off to re-immerse myself in health care ethics and caring for children.

School Girl

And it's here. My second year of uni. Considering I would be in my final year if I hadn't deferred, that's a little scary. It's great to be learning again, I'm very goal-orientated and I was feeling a little lacklustre over the holidays with nothing to work towards. Plus I love being in the city three days a week. Melbourne is my favourite.

Square Window

Is this not the most amazing window you have ever seen? Well it makes me excited. Because it only came into existence 4 days ago. And now our bedroom is brimming with natural light and happiness. It's a revelation. The view's not bad either. Curtains pending.

Fit for a Princess

When I was a little girl I lived for Disney movies.

So when I saw the Disney Couture range on ASOS I quite literally died.

They're very reasonably priced to boot. I will have that necklace if I have to sell my poison apple and pawn my glass coffin. See the whole collection here.

Orange Ya Glad?

Hooray for your own home with your clothes and camera and bed and all those little things you miss when you're house sitting. It's funny, because it's not like a holiday, where you have sights and things to distract you from the foreignness. When you house sit you still have to do boring things like work, but in a strange house without a lot of the things you love about home.

Any who, the outfit! This dress was a gift from my sister. And when I say gift I really mean she bought it online and found it didn't suit her so she gave it to me! This is not a rare occurrence, the same situation applies to the shoes I'm wearing. This dress is such a fun, smily colour. And despite the cloudy skies it wasn't quite cool enough for tights.

I start back at uni on Wednesday so I'm trying to kick myself into organisation mode and get on top of work and pre reading and things early. Not terribly exciting, but it soothes my Capricorn control freak side.

Hairy

I got my hair cut yesterday. It's very short. At the moment it's still in that hazy blow-waved stage. Once I get back to my routine of doing absolutely nothing bar washing it it should become a little more natural. Mum, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.

Photobucket

I also scored some great op shop finds yesterday and today, including an awesome preppy Ralph Lauren top for $4! Only a few days left of out house sitting gig and then normal blogging should resume next week.

Just Write

I first met Reece when we were both around 10. I'd moved to a new primary school and he came a year later. I was awkward with long, straggly hair, glasses and a penchant for long books like Lord of the Rings. He was a little on the big side, but his sweet nature always shone through.
While we were never real friends, I had an amazing imagination and found myself with a sizeable crush on him, among a few other boys in the year. I blame a strong and steady diet of Disney and soppy books. He was my Kris Kringle, I believe he gave me a pink ruler and hair ties. I still have the card somewhere.
Fast forward seven years or so and we found ourselves in the same English class with a few mutual friends who formed a larger group. We sat next to each other and found we both loved the British show Skins and had a similar, quirky sense of humour.
At the local fair (called Yakerboo of all things) he confessed he liked me. A balloon still sits in the pocket of the overalls I wore that day. The next day he asked me out. Can you guess the answer?
Nearly four years on and we live together, are trying to save for our first home and love each other more everyday. I find myself nearly in tears as I sit and try and recall those first sparks and the raging bushfire they created. There have been tough moments. Not fights as such, but a tenseness that could have swung either way. Thankfully we grew together in the same direction and I have every faith that we will continue to do so. Marriage and kids are a long way in the distance, after all we are only twenty. But I know in my heart we are the high school sweet hearts who will be together at every re-uninon - if anyone from our class has the skills to organise one.

Happy Valentines Day.
May a white knight sweep you off your feet and promise to love you no matter how incomprehensibly large your wardrobe is, watch Ryan Gosling
movies with you and pick his socks up off the floor.

My Smeg Retro Icon Is..

So of course I want to be in the running for this giveaway Solanah is throwing over at Vixen Vintage.

Here it goes..

My Smeg Retro Icon is, of course, my blog's namesake. Audrey Hepburn. I love her for her amazing style, grace and elegance. For her courage in the face of adversity, her love for her family and her pets and for indescribable natural beauty. Her style is timeless and flawless and her movies are the perfect remedy for a down mood. She was and is simply perfection

Sitting Pretty

Reece and I are house sitting this week. As a result nearly all my clothes and my darling camera are a 2 minute drive away. I must apologise for the radio silence which will inevitably ensue, though I have some days off and a hair cut coming up this week and may just be able to scrape a few posts together.
I'm on the hunt for a few regular posts, maybe a 'uni thursday' or 'make up monday'. Something that would make me try new things or experiment would be ideal.
I recently joined the gym, so I'm off to pretend to be fit while still sniffling away from the back-end of this cold.

Possibly Sunday

These photos are from the other day. I couldn't tell you what I did. I think it was hot, so it must of been the weekend. With our skills of deduction we can determine I must have worked. My short term memory is terrible.

Reece has kindly gifted me with his cold, an early valentines day present? I can feel myself fading so I'm going to curl up and watch Harry Potter. Their voices are so squeaky in the first film. Silly little wizards.

Garden Gnomes

Yesterday Jaymee and I got our garden on, setting up a worm farm and reviving the neglected veggie patch. Jaymee did most of the work really, I just looked pretty.
We planted carrot, shallots, spinach, lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower. There were already some cherry tomatoes growing of their own accord next to the patch. I love the idea of being self sufficient, and being vegetarian I can get by on what I can grow myself. I'd love to get some chickens for eggs too.

Pink and Purple

I was a little warped today, coming off 4 late night shifts in a row. Finishing late I find I'm too wired to sleep and I ended up watching a disc of Dexter and the start of The Notebook before I drifted off.

When I finally roused myself from bed today this is what I put on.

I also painted my nails as I have a blissful three days off in a row. I'm excited for uni to start back as I know I'll have three days of pretty nails a week.

Purple Heart

While I'm finding them a bit difficult to style and to me they aren't the most comfortable item of clothing, I still love my purple jeans. In a perfect world they'd be a little higher waisted and a smidge less restricting, but those are my issues with jeans as a whole.

I like them enough though, that I'm considering purchasing these babies from asos. They seem like a perfect winter stable. Rich colour and easy to layer.

I Love

This week I love....

This video of Kristen Bell, I love her even more now.

Photobucket
Coincidently I only just finished re-watching Veronica Mars,
the most awesome show of all time.

Photobucket
If I were getting married in the near future, it would be in this dress.

This video of Matt Corby. WATCH IT, I command you.
Or just skip to 4.34, my ovaries exploded a little.

And if you like them apples, watch this cover
of The Black Keys' 'Lonely Boy' by Matt Corby

And finally, this tumblr. Any Ryan Gosling is a
good Ryan Gosling, but vintage Ryan Gosling is awesome.

Happy Weekend

Grumpy Alice

Photobucket

I'm not having the best of days. Feelings of unfullfillment and listlessness have been bubbling under the surface. Lucky uni starts back soon to give me something to work towards and I have a wonderful boyfriend who helps me (read, makes me) talk things out. I need to work to do things that help people and try to indulge my creative side more and remember not to push down my feelings until they erupt in an ugly volcano of tears and snot and ruined eyeliner.
